At the top of the Golden Staircase, the Palisade Lakes are hidden from view. Gathering clouds begin to look worrisome.

Palisade Lakes
The JMT cuts close to the lower lake, but passes high above the upper one. This is a rugged high basin, not above timberline, but so rocky that tree growth is patchy.
